There are many reasons Australians want to win the lottery. The beauty of winning a prize is that it opens up so many life-changing opportunities.

For some, a win signals the chance to create the life they’ve always dreamed of. This might mean buying a new car, luxury home, or the perfect holiday experience. For others, a lottery win could represent the prospect of early retirement or financial security. The possibilities are truly endless.

However, research shows Australian lottery players are increasingly motivated to win the lottery for more altruistic reasons.

A study conducted from January 2017 to April 2019 asked Australians why they wanted to win a lottery prize.

Over a two-year period, the number of people saying they want to win so they can share their good fortune with friends, family, and the community has risen by 12 per cent.

Results from April of this year showed that sharing good fortune was the key motivating factor for 30 per cent of all respondents, second only to the desire for financial freedom, which held 37 per cent of responses.

This suggests that generosity is progressively becoming a larger part of the lottery dream. Australians don’t just want to change their own lives; they want to have a positive impact on the people and community around them.

We often hear our real winners reflect this sentiment when we break the life-altering news that they’ve won the big one.

In April this year, a generous Lalor man revealed he was looking forward to sharing his TattsLotto division one win with his cherished family.

Similarly, a woman from New South Wales who won Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot 1st Prize of $200,000 in March declared she would be helping out her family as well as giving generously to her favourite charity.

The rise of the altruistic Aussie has been on a steady climb and time will tell if we see this trend continue.
