$3 million Powerball winners declare Stuarts Point as the "best place on Earth"
A holidaying couple from Sydney’s Hornsby Shire already thought Stuarts Point was pretty special, but now have more than three million reasons why they call it the “best place on earth”.
This afternoon, the unsuspecting couple discovered their entry purchased at Stuarts Point Newsagency, Shop 2, 16 Marine Parade, Stuarts Point, was the only division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1131 on Thursday 18 January 2018.
In addition to winning division one, the couple’s 2-game PowerHit entry also won division two 19 times, bolstering their total prize to $3,184,274.35.
As the winning entry was not registered to a Players Club card, NSW Lotteries officials had no way to contact the mystery ticketholder to deliver the dream-come-true news.
Speaking to a NSW Lotteries official this afternoon, the winning man explained how the hunt for a newspaper led him and his wife to discovering their enviable prize.
“I came to get the newspaper and I thought I had better check my Powerball entry,” he said.
“I handed the ticket to the lady at the counter and she had this funny look. I thought ‘maybe I’ve won some money’.
“We thought we’d won a million dollars and we were dancing around. Then she says ‘you’ve won $3 million!’. It’s three million dollars! It just gets better and better!
The winner explained how he used a previous lottery win to buy their winning PowerHit entry – a type of entry that guarantees the all-important Powerball number from a draw.
“I only discovered the PowerHit four or five months ago! I love the PowerHit. I don’t buy Powerball without it!” the winning man shared.
The regular Powerball players had been in the region on holidays, with the win cementing their glowing opinion of the area.
“I was saying to my wife this morning, before all of this, that this is the nicest place in the world. There you go! It just got a whole lot sweeter,” he declared.
With the win still sinking in, the couple already plan to share their windfall with their family and take more time to enjoy life.
“There will be a bit more work-life balance from here on in. I won’t be doing 12 hour days anymore!” he laughed.
The Stuarts Point win comes just over a week since a mystery Melbourne entry won a massive $55 million Powerball jackpot, which is yet to be claimed.
The region has a track record of Powerball wins – in September last year, an entry sold at Nambucca Heads won $25 million.
Stuarts Point Newsagency owner Elaine Coleman said word had quickly spread across the region that her outlet had sold a division one winning entry.
“They’re all buzzing! It’s excitement plus!” she exclaimed.
“This is the first division one winning entry we’ve sold. What a way to go! We’ve sold three division two winning entries too over the years. Powerball must be our game!”
The winning numbers in Powerball draw 1131 on Thursday 18 January 2018 were 19, 35, 36, 13, 3 and 8, while the all-important Powerball number was 6.
Last financial year, 18 Powerball division one winning entries across the Lott’s jurisdictions won more than $273 million.
The Lott’s division one winning tally has now reached 241 so far this calendar year, including 78 won by NSW Lotteries customers.
