A hard-working Ayr couple received one of the best surprises of their lives this morning when they discovered they were the missing winners of last Thursday’s $15 million Powerball jackpot!

Checking their ticket this morning, the happy couple greeted the news with screaming and crying, declaring the multi-million dollar prize their best Valentine’s Day present ever.

“Oh wow! Oh beautiful! Oh wow! My wife is screaming here,” the man exclaimed.

“It’s bloody awesome. My wife’s going mental!”

“I’m crying! We’re set up for the rest of our lives!” the wife interjected.

While the happy couple, who work in the tourism industry, said they were regular Powerball players, the man explained that he had purchased the unregistered winning Powerball ticket last week on a whim.

“My wife’s got a Winners Circle Card that we usually register our lotto tickets to, but I just went in on Thursday to get a coffee and I thought ‘Bugger it, it’s $15 million! I’ve got to grab a ticket!’,” he said.

“I didn’t even think to check it. My wife saw the ticket in my wallet today and said ‘That Powerball prize hasn’t been claimed yet - Let me check that’.

“I’m glad my wife insisted I did, I could’ve thrown the bloody thing out!

“We couldn’t believe it! We thought ‘No, it can’t be us!’.” The couple said they planned to share the prize with their family and book some future overseas travel.

“We’re going to see the world!” the man exclaimed.

“I’d love to go see America, Canada and Europe.”

The winners, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased their winning ticket from Tosh’s Convenience Store, 9 Chippendale Street in Ayr.

The $15 million Powerball winning couple is the second customer of Tosh’s Convenience Store to become a multi-millionaire in just 15 months. In November 2015, an Ayr family won a$23.3 million division one share in a Powerball jackpot.

Tosh’s Convenience Store manager Hayley Williams said she passed on a hearty congratulations to their latest customers to become

“I would like to say a big congratulations to our winning couple! We are super, super excited for them!” she exclaimed.

“We hope this windfall brings them endless happiness and they enjoy their travels around the world!

“At Tosh’s Convenience Store we believe good things happen in threes so fingers crossed there’s another multi-millionaire in the making here!

“But of course, once we have our third division one win, we’ll believe good things happen in fours!” she laughed.

The $15 million Powerball win is also the second jackpot win in North Queensland within the past week, with a Mareeba farmer claiming a $15 million Oz Lotto division one prize.

The winning numbers in Powerball draw 1082 on Thursday 9 February 2017 were 11, 23, 16, 33, 31 and 21. The all-important Powerball number was 2.

The recent spate of Queensland winners have taken the Lott’s division one winners tally to 253 so far this financial year, including 59 won by Golden Casket customers.
