Ahead of this Thursday’s record-breaking $150 million Powerball draw, we sat down with Bronwyn Spencer to find out what it’s like to make those life-changing phone calls and how she’s preparing for this Thursday night.

 

What is it like to call a major lottery prize winner?

As you can imagine, calling someone to let them know they have won a division one prize is pretty amazing and it’s not only unforgettable for the winner, but for me too! There are instances where the person we are calling has absolutely no idea they are a division one winner, soto be able to break that kind of news to someone is pretty incredible. It’s an absolute privilege to be a part of someone’s life in such an unbelievable moment. 

What are some of the best reactions you’ve ever received? 

From absolute silence to screams, every winner’s reaction is unique which makes my job so exciting!

You never know what you are going to get on the other end of the phone but one of my favourite reactions was when I broke the news to a young tradie in his 20s from Melbourne. 

When I told him that he was now $20 million richer, he was so overwhelmed he dropped to the ground and screamed ‘I’m laying on the ground in shock! I can’t believe it! Oh my god! Oh my god!’ as his workmates cheered and laughed in the background. 

What happens during the phone call?

Before we can break the news to the winner, we do need to ensure we are speaking to the rightful ticket holder. We will ask the person we are speaking to some questions that only the ticket holder would know the answers to.

Once we are sure we are talking to the right person, we suggest they may want to sit down before we share the exciting news!

Do you get nervous calling a winner? And will you be nervous to potentially call someone this Thursday night? 

I always have a bit of an adrenalin rush calling any winner but for these multi-million dollar draws the rush is immeasurable. My heart flutters and I get shaky as I hear the dial tone. I hold my breath until the winner answers.  I am always grateful when they pick up after a couple of rings!

If one person takes home the entire division one prize for Powerball this week, it will be the largest lottery prize I have ever confirmed so it could be an incredible moment for me also. 

What time could you be calling someone this Thursday night?

If the $150 million Powerball jackpot is won this Thursday night, we will be calling any registered division one winners after 9pm AEST that night.
