A loving dad in his 50s says he’s over the moon after taking home last night’s $40 million Powerball prize.

The winner’s 25-game marked entry was the only division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1189, drawn Thursday 28 February 2019.

When we made contact with the winner this morning, the man recounted how he discovered the life-changing news, having checked his entry after the draw last night.

“I was just sitting at home last night and for something to do I thought I would check my Powerball ticket,” he explained.

“I checked the numbers and recognised that a few of them were mine, so I double checked them again.

“I showed my wife and she said ‘this can’t be true, something must be wrong here’.

"We didn’t believe it until the news was confirmed this morning.

“We are over-the-moon!”

While every number has an equal chance of being drawn from the barrel of 35, seven of last night’s numbers from the main barrel fell between 2 and 14.

The thrilled winner revealed how he came to choose those remarkable winning numbers on his 25-game marked entry.

“I’ve been playing Powerball for about six or seven years and for a long time I was buying QuickPicks,” he said.

“A little while ago I thought I would change it up a bit and so I marked a coupon using my large family’s birthdates.

“Once I changed the numbers, I started to win a few small things here and there so I thought to myself ‘I’m not going to change these, I’m going to stick to them.’

“I’ve never won anything like this!”

As for what he intends to do with his $40 million prize, the level-headed man said he wasn’t planning anything extravagant.

“I’m not into flashy houses or cars – it’s all about family first,” he declared.

“We are quite involved in the local community in which we live. We’d love to give back to the charities and organisations close to our heart in the community.

“We’ve been doing it tough the last few years so this will make a whole world of difference to my family."

This win is largest jackpot prize to fall in South Australia in a decade.

The last time a single Powerball entry held by an Australian lottery player took home $40 million was in May 2014, when a father from Brisbane’s northside took home the entire prize pool.
